Why 9:16 beats 16:9 on social platforms
Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts are optimised for one-thumb scrolling on mobile. A 16:9 video occupies 30-40 percent of the screen, the bars above and below are filled with black or neutral, and the user's brain reads that in 0.4 seconds as "repackaged from another platform" - the algorithm lowers priority. A 9:16 video fills 100 percent of the screen, and hook-rate (retention to the 3rd second) rises from 18-22 percent to 35-48 percent on the same content. That is not marketing - it is internal TikTok Business Center data from 2025.
Reels supports a 60-180 second limit, but 80 percent of viral Reels are 14-22 seconds long. Watch-time matters more than likes, and the Meta algorithm rewards videos with completion rate above 75 percent. TikTok's sweet spot is 7-12 seconds for the hook test and 15-30 seconds for viral story formats. YouTube Shorts runs at a 30-60 second ceiling.
How to shoot vertical on a drone: 3 techniques
First - true vertical capture: the DJI Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 4 Pro have a True Vertical Shooting mode, the gimbal rotates 90 degrees, and the sensor records native 3K x 4K in vertical orientation. The cleanest path, with no pixel loss. The downside - not all triplet lenses work in vertical, only the main Hasselblad.
Second - post-crop from horizontal 4K: shoot 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), crop to 1080 x 1920 in Premiere or DaVinci. This is the working option for Air 3S, Mini 4 Pro and Avata 2 - they have no native vertical mode. The downside - cropping has to be directed on the day, not in the edit: you need to understand that the centre of action must land in the middle 56 percent of the horizontal frame. The upside - one capture can be edited both at 16:9 for YouTube and 9:16 for Reels.
Third - 6K/8K downscale into 9:16: on the Mavic 4 Pro Cine (6K H.265) and the Inspire 3 (8K ProRes) you can shoot at maximum resolution and crop down to 1920 x 3416 (for a 4K Reel on the new iPhone Pro Max) or to 1080 x 1920 for standard Instagram. The resolution headroom allows post-zoom without detail loss and double-cropping for two different platforms from a single take. This is the premium approach for brand content.
Hook structure: the first 1.2 seconds decide everything
Average watch-time for a drone Reel in Warsaw in 2025-26 is 14.8 seconds per Meta Insights. If the viewer does not stop scrolling within the first 1.2 seconds, average drops to 0.9 seconds and the algorithm treats the Reel as irrelevant - distribution drops 60-80 percent. A hook is built on three patterns: motion shock (a fast pull-back or a dive from a building's roof), pattern interrupt (an unusual object - a helicopter, a boat, a horse, fireworks in frame), or a text overlay with a number ("This house sold in 19 days. Here is why").
For a real estate Reel, the hook is a reveal: 0-1.2 s a top-down view of the neighbourhood in golden hour, 1.2-3 s a fast flyover to the roof of the house, 3-7 s a mid-altitude orbit, 7-12 s an approach to the window with a rotation into the interior. For a wedding Reel, the hook is the couple plus the location: 0-1.2 s the bride's bouquet in the foreground with the drone at 2 m, 1.2-3 s a pull-back to the couple on the steps, 3-8 s an orbit around them, 8-14 s a pull-up into the sky above the park. For a promo Reel, the hook is the brand through action: 0-1.2 s the product in hand, 1.2-3 s a pull-back to the scene, 3-8 s an FPV pass through the brand environment.
Edit rhythm and audio: what holds retention
- Cut frequency: 0.6-1.4 seconds between cuts. Below 0.6 the viewer cannot process the shot, above 1.4 they lose interest. The sweet spot is 1.0-1.2 s for real estate, 1.2-1.6 s for weddings, 0.7-0.9 s for promo.
- On-beat hits: cutting on the music beat raises watch-time by 15-22 percent. Trending audio from the Instagram Audio Library or commercial tracks from Artlist, Epidemic Sound (license around 200 PLN/month for an agency) is the standard.
- Burned-in captions: 80 percent of Reels are watched without sound. Without captions, watch-time drops by 30-35 percent. Font SF Pro Display or Inter, 64-72 pt on 1080 x 1920, contrast outline or backplate.
- Length: Reels 14-22 s, TikTok 7-12 s for the hook test and 15-30 s for story, Shorts 25-45 s. Longer is algorithmically unprofitable outside niche education formats.
Native 1080p H.264 vs 4K H.265: what TikTok prefers
Paradox: TikTok internally recompresses video to 1080 x 1920 H.264, and a 4K H.265 upload is run through a re-encode with quality loss on the final output. The working pipeline: edit in 4K H.265 for archive and the Otodom deliverable, export 1080 x 1920 H.264 at 8-12 Mbit/s, 24/25/30 fps for TikTok. For Instagram Reels, 4K H.265 is fine - there is native HEVC support. For YouTube Shorts, 4K H.265 - YouTube's processing pipeline is qualitatively better.
Pricing 2026: dedicated Reels package and add-on
- Dedicated Reels-only package: 1,800-3,200 PLN. Includes 4-7 finished Reels of 14-22 s in 1080 x 1920 H.264, a 2-hour shoot, edit, captions PL/EN, music from a commercial library. Fits an Otodom listing, hotel or restaurant, or a small-format brand campaign.
- Reels add-on to an existing shoot (real estate, wedding, event): +800-1,400 PLN. On top of the full 60-second video and 25 ground photos, you get 3-5 vertical Reels from the same material plus 1-2 extra drone passes optimised for 9:16.
- Premium brand Reels package: 4,500-7,500 PLN. Includes scripting, storyboard, Mavic 4 Pro Cine or Inspire 3, 4K H.265 + 1080p H.264 deliverable for all platforms, 6-10 Reels in three versions (Reel, TikTok, Shorts), 360° aerial panorama for the account.
- Wedding Reels package (add-on to a wedding film): +1,200-2,200 PLN. 4-6 Reels from ceremony, party and drone shots plus a speed-edit Reel within 48 hours of the wedding for same-day posting.
Cases: 3 projects, different platforms, different KPIs
- Otodom listing in Wilanów: a 3.2M PLN house, an 18-second Reel with a drone reveal in golden hour. 480k views on Instagram Reels in 14 days, 7 viewings, closed in 19 days at asking. Reel budget - 2,400 PLN (add-on to a 4,800 PLN real estate package).
- Wedding Reel from Pałac Belweder: a 14-second edit on the Mavic 4 Pro plus an Avata 2 dive shot from the bouquet upward. 1.2M views on TikTok in 9 days, 18k shares, two additional wedding bookings from the comments. Add-on budget - 1,800 PLN on top of a 14,000 PLN wedding package.
- Hotel in Masuria (Mikołajki): a series of 6 drone Reels for a Booking-driven Instagram campaign. 2.1M total views in 6 weeks, traffic to the hotel's Instagram account up 180 percent, Booking conversion via the UTM tracker up 27 percent in high season. Full package budget - 5,800 PLN (2-day shoot plus a 6-Reel edit).
A 9:16 Reel is not extra exposure - it is the main channel. For me 70 percent of viewings come from Instagram, and without vertical drone content I would lose 2 closings a month in the premium segment. One Reel from Konstancin pulled 320k views in 11 days - more than a full year of banner ads on Otodom Premium gave me.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I get an editable project file?
- Yes - the base package includes a final platform export (1080 x 1920 H.264 for TikTok, 4K H.265 for Reels and Shorts). An editable DaVinci or Premiere project file is an option at +400-800 PLN, with XML/DRP linked to the raw files, colour-grade nodes and audio stems. Raw 4K/6K H.265 or ProRes files are delivered via WeTransfer or to your Google Drive within 72 hours of the shoot, with sizes from 30 to 180 GB depending on session length.
- Do you do graphics and captions in Polish and English?
- Yes - burned-in captions in two languages (PL and EN) are package standard. Font SF Pro Display or Inter, 64-72 pt on 1080 x 1920, contrast outline or backplate for dark backgrounds. Extra languages (RU, UK, DE) are +150 PLN per language per Reel. A lower-third with the agency logo and bedrooms/bathrooms/m² icons for real estate Reels is included in the real estate package. Animated text overlays like "-19 days", "3.2M PLN", "480k views" are standard.
- How many Reels come out of one shoot day?
- Realistically 4-7 finished Reels from 4-6 hours on a single property (real estate, hotel, restaurant). At a wedding - 3-5 Reels from 8-10 hours on site (ceremony, party, golden hour). At dynamic events (concert, fashion show, sport) - up to 10 Reels from a 5-hour session thanks to fast cut moments. The cap is not on raw material but on clear narrative structure: each Reel needs its own hook, story and close, otherwise it falls into filler content and pulls the account down.
- How does music licensing work for commercial Reels?
- We use the commercial libraries Artlist, Epidemic Sound and Soundstripe - the standard license covers use on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for commercial accounts without a separate ASCAP/ZAiKS fee. License cost is 180-280 PLN/month for an agency, billed pro-rata to the client per project. Trending audio from the Instagram Audio Library can only be used on personal accounts, not on verified business accounts (Meta 2024 rule) - which often limits the selection for real estate and brand work. Alternative - custom sound design with a license from a composer - 800-2,400 PLN for an exclusive track.
- What aspect ratio does Otodom need?
- Otodom, as the main listing channel, uses 16:9 for the main video and photo gallery - that is the platform standard, and without it the cover does not render correctly. 9:16 on Otodom is not the primary format but is added as a secondary one for Otodom Premium listings with Stories-like screen support in the mobile version. So the correct pipeline is: a main 60-90 s video in 16:9 for Otodom, plus 3-5 Reels of 14-22 s in 9:16 for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube Shorts (used to drive traffic back to the Otodom listing).
